On 11 Sep 2001, 19 militants hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States.
The National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City has two reflecting pools with waterfalls rushing down where the Twin Towers once rose into the sky. The names of all 2,983 victims are engraved on the 152 bronze panels surrounding the pools, arranged by where individuals were on the day of the attacks.
The Pentagon Memorial consists of a landscaped park with 184 benches facing the Pentagon. A private chapel and indoor memorial is located at the spot where flight 77 crashed into the building.
In Shanksville, PA, an observation platform at the visitors center and a white marble Wall of Names are both aligned beneath the path of flight 93.
