Past News - School Colors
FSU's predecessor institutions went through several color changes before settling on the iconic Garnet & Gold we know today ...
In 1801, when our institution was known as the Florida State College (FSC), the official school colors were purple and gold.
In 1905, Florida reorganization of education resulted in FSC becoming a women's institution - Florida Female College, then Florida State College for Women. Athletes took part in intramural games in teams determined by their graduation years - Odd & Even teams comprised of students graduating in odd and even years. Odds wore red, white, and purple uniforms, while the Evens wore green and white uniforms. Over time, the Florida Flambeau began referring to Odd teams as garnet and Even teams as gold.
In 1947, the university became coeducational once again and the Seminoles came onto the field for the first time in Garnet & Gold.
